Dozens of rabbis are heading home with a lot less hair from the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) Convention.
Rabbis came together as usual for the annual CCAR Convention on April 1. However, this year’s gathering had a moving additional event. Inspired by the story of Sam Sommer, the 8-year-old son of two rabbis who died from acute myeloid leukemia in December, CCAR teamed up with St. Baldrick’s charity to host the conference’s culminating event, “Shave for the Brave.”
More than 70 rabbis signed up to come under razor, shaving their heads in solidarity with Sam and the 10,000+ children who are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2014. Through their fundraising the rabbis also raised $572,023 for pediatric cancer research.
