What inspired you to do this work?
First and foremost, I am inspired by the patients and families I have met during my time with St. Jude. Knowing that I have played even the smallest role in helping them go on to live a long and healthy life, together as a family, is what motivates me to keep going. I also fully believe that when a cure for childhood cancer is found, it will be found in the labs at St. Jude.
What’s a fundraising tactic you’ve employed in the last year or two that you’d suggest others try?
In an attempt to cut through the clutter, we have been trying to reach our participants through video. My favorites are our video messages from a St. Jude patient which we share when fundraisers reach an important milestone. This way, they get immediate recognition and a connection back to the kids that they are raising money for.
What has been your proudest accomplishment as a fundraiser?
My proudest accomplishment is getting this program off the ground. I have been with the walk since it started six years ago so I have been able to take it from inception to the program that it is today.
What advice would you give to someone just starting a career in peer-to-peer fundraising?
Soak up as much information as possible. I was a fundraiser for several years before I got introduced to the Run Walk Ride space and was amazed at the amount of information and expertise that is out there. Make sure to learn from others’ success and mistakes.
